Golden Globe flowers, black eyed Susan’s and butterfly bush all bloom together in mid August.
I started this painting in 2020, but didn’t have a chance to finish it before the killing frosts arrived. This year, 2021, I resumed when the flowers rebloomed.
The combination of yellows and purples is pleasing to my colour sense. They are opposite on the colour wheel and complementary colours which I love to use in my paintings. Actually, the blue and orange are complements as well.
The blue background is a nod to the worldwide pandemic that has bookended this painting. Painting flowers is a great way to chase away those pandemic blues. It is a reminder of the resilience and beauty of plantlife.
Here is a clip of the painting in progress in my studio.
