Artist Statement

The relationship between colour, texture and the natural world is what I like to explore in my work.

My artistic influences range from the Canadian Group of Seven approach to landscape, the German Expressionist use of colour and the contemporary Californian colourists play with texture.

The infinite patterns and symbols in nature all find their way into my paintings.

I was born and lived most of my life in downtown Toronto. Ever since I held my first camera in my hands at the age of 12, I have been pointing it at the natural world. My very first photographs were of clumps of weeds in the laneway behind our row house.

In the late sixties I studied fine arts and craft at the Art Centre at Central Technical School, Toronto. I graduated with a love for painting, printmaking and weaving. In the early 1970’s I lived in Berlin, Germany where I studied painting and drawing at the Kunsthochschule Weissensee.

During the 1990’s I painted exclusively with watercolours and gradually moved to fluid acrylics in the 21st century. Since coming to Nova Scotia in 2007 I’ve also been experimenting with oil sticks and monoprinting.

I garden and grow a vast array of plants and flowers as subjects for my paintings in Bear River. This has become my own place of paradise.
