Thumbelina

Thumbelina ©Flora Doehler 16″ x 16″ Multimedia, collage, acrylic on birchwood cradleboard. $450

Thumbelina is a fairy tale written almost 200 years ago by Hans Christian Anderson.
A tiny girl is born out of a tulip flower and faces many life challenges until she finally meets her same-sized prince. As a child I loved to imagine the perspective that a tiny fairy-like being would have in a garden setting and that was my challenge with this piece.

In 2014 I created a collaged series based on my favorite fairy tales. Recently I looked my Thumbelina and reworked it to create more movement in the imagined garden. All of the pieces are hand painted on watercolour paper and adhered to a birchwood cradleboard.
